The Review Project

Square One

Welcome to The Review Project! Thanks for your interest—this page is designed to get you up and running and reading the reviews you’re interested in.

Search or Browse?

There are two main ways to read this site—searching, or browsing. Both are available at the top of every page of the site.

Searching looks through every bit of data we have, including record label, disc number, soloists, conductors and ensembles, as well as the text of the review itself. If you’re looking for a specific person, or a specific disc, then this is a good way to start.

Browsing allows you to look through lists of reviews in various categories. We put every review into two categories—one describing its era, and one describing its genre. For example, Handel’s Messiah appears in both the Baroque and Oratorio categories, while John Adams’ El NiƱo appears in the Oratorio and 21st-century categories. Next to the search box at the top of the page is a drop-down menu which lists all our categories. Pick one, and start browsing! (Alternatively, you’ll find the complete list of categories written out at the bottom of this page.)

One exception to these category rules is live concerts. In this case, one category shows that it’s Live, the other the type of performance (Choral, Orchestral, etc).

We’re also working on ways to present a number of other lists—for example, lists of discs from particular record companies, or featuring a certain soloist.
